Apostille in Montenegro: Foreign Document Legalisation and Possible Exemptions

Updated:
Before submitting foreign documents in Montenegro, establish whether the particular document requires an apostille, another form of legalisation or qualifies for an exemption under an international agreement.
Nationality is not the only criterion. The issuing country, document type, procedure and scope of the agreement applied by Montenegro also matter.
Countries to check for a possible apostille exemption
- Algeria
- Austria
- Belgium
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Bulgaria
- Czech Republic
- France
- Greece
- Croatia
- Iraq
- Italy
- Cyprus
- Hungary
- North Macedonia
- Mongolia
- Poland
- Romania
- Russian Federation
- Serbia
- Ukraine
What to check for your document
- The country and authority that issued it.
- The document type and its intended use in Montenegro.
- Whether the applicable agreement covers that specific category of public document.
- Whether the authority requires an original, certified copy or international form.
- Translation requirements and the maximum acceptable age of the document.
Is a certified translation required?
An apostille exemption does not automatically remove translation requirements. Where prescribed, documents must be translated by an authorised court translator. Check whether the apostille or other legalisation certificate also needs translation.
